What Does the Video Mean?

I went the ways of wayward winds
In a world of trouble and sin
Walked a long and crooked mile
Behind a million rank and file
Forgot where I came from
Somewhere back when I was young
I was a good man’s child

‘Cause I lost some nameless things
My innocence flew away from me
She had to hide her face from my desire
To embrace forbidden fire
But at night I dream
She’s singing over me
Oh, oh, my child

Come on home, home to me
And I will hold you in my arms
And joyful be

There will always, always be
A place for you at my table
Return to me

Wondering where I might begin
Hear a voice upon the wind
She’s singing faint but singing true
Son, there ain’t nothing you can do
But listen close and follow me
I’ll take you where you’re meant to be
Just don’t lose faith

So I put my hand upon the plow
Wipe the sweat up from my brow
Plant the good seed along the way
As I look forward to the day
When at last I see
My Father run to me
Singing oh, my child

Come on home, home to me
And I will hold you in my arms
And joyful be

There will always, always be
A place for you at my table
Return to me
My child

The video starts with the Cross at the center of a glowing lady. Kind of weird—what does it mean? The lady represents “wisdom”; Wisdom invites every person to eat the food she offers. This food is bread and wine.

However, dark figures grab humans by their very hearts and drag them away from wisdom into a land of death and emptiness. Those dark figures are the dark desires we wrestle with every single day. Have you ever burst out in anger at a friend, or said something cruel to a love one, or done something you’ve regretted? Have you ever felt “slimy” or guilty afterwards? According to the Bible, these actions spring from jacked up desires in our hearts. No one lies to a friend out of duty; we usually tell lies because we want to protect something.

The Bible also tells us that this is the path of death (Romans 6:23). In other words, when we give into evil desires, we are saying “Yes!” to those desires. We let them become a part of us, and as a result we are dragged away from Wisdom. We turn from the Source of all life and all goodness, and long for other ambitions more than the God who made us. Humans have universally acted out on evil desires; as a result, we all are twisted inside. We’ve all told lies, insulted others, acted in selfishness because of desires that define us.

However, the Bible assures us that we are not without hope. Wisdom still calls out to us. In fact, wisdom came to rescue us in the Person of Jesus Christ. That means that God’s wisdom—His knowledge and control over the affairs of the world in a loving, just, and good way—was on full display in Jesus (who is Himself God). The scene of the darkened human sitting at the table tells us about the undeserved kindness of God towards us. Though the human heart is filled with dark desire, Jesus offers us a spot at His table. He has secured this spot through His Cross.

On the Cross, Jesus took the condemnation due sinners. He stood in their place and united them to Himself. Somehow, mysteriously, all those who yield their life to this man die. Through Jesus’ death on the Cross, His followers experience the death of evil in their hearts. Jesus actually killed their own identity by dying. And when Jesus rose from the dead, He renews His followers lives and gives them a new heart with new desires. Through His blood, we can be set free from the darkness in our hearts. In His Resurrection, God renews our hearts and promises to raise us physically from the dead as well. In other words, God is undoing what sin had done in and through Jesus Christ.

The story of the Bible is one big story about what God is doing, how God has loved the world, and how God invites us to know His beauty. It is the story that God tells of His own majesty. Taste and see that this story is good!
